Let’s read together: The Story of the Inky Boys<\/strong> by Heinrich Hoffmann<\/h2>\n

As he had often done before,
\nThe woolly-headed black-a-moor
\nOne nice fine summer’s day went out
\nTo see the shops and walk about;
\nAnd as he found it hot, poor fellow,
\nHe took with him his green umbrella
\nThen Edward, little noisy wag,
\nRan out and laugh’d, and waved his flag,
\nAnd William came in jacket trim,
\nAnd brought his woollen hoop with him;
\nAnd Caspar, too, snatch’d up his toys
\nAnd joined the other naughty boys;
\nSo one and all set up a roar,
\nAnd laughed and hooted more and more,
\nAnd kept on singing,–only think!–
\n“Ohl Blacky, you’re as black as ink”<\/p>\n

Now Saint Nicholas lieved close by,–
\nSo tall he almost touched the sky;
\nHe had a mighty inkstand too,
\nIn which a great goose feather grew;
\nHe call’d out in an angry tone,
\n“Boys, leave the black-a-moor alone!
\nFor if he tries with all his might,
\nHe cannot change from black to white.”
\nBut ah! they did not mind a bit
\nWhat Saint Nicholas said of it;
\nBut went on laughing, as before,
\nAnd hooting at the black-a-moor.<\/p>\n

Then Saint Nicholas foams with rage:
\nLook at him on this very page!
\nHe seizes Caspar, seizes Ned,
\nTakes William by his little head;
\nAnd they may scream, and kick, and call,
\nBut into the ink he dips them all;
\nInto the inkstand, one, two, three,
\nTill they are black, as black can be;
\nTurn over now and you shall see.<\/p>\n

See, there they are, and there they run!
\nThe black-a-moor enjoys the fun.
\nThey have been made as black as crows,
\nQuite black all over, eyes and nose,
\nAnd legs, and arms, and heads, and toes.
\nAnd trowsers, pinafores, and toys,–
\nThe silly little inky boys!
\nBecause they set up such a roar,
\nAnd teas’d the harmless black-a-moor.<\/p>\n
