Let’s read together: The Story of the Wild Huntsman<\/strong> by Heinrich Hoffmann<\/h2>\n

This is the Wild Huntsman that shoots the hares
\nWith the grass-green coat he always wears:
\nWith game-bag, powder-horn and gun,
\nHe’s going out to have some fun.
\nHe finds it hard, without a pair
\nOf spectacles, to shoot the hare:
\nHe put his spectacles upon his nose, and said,
\n“Now I will shoot the hares, and kill them dead.”<\/p>\n

The hare sits snug in leaves and grass
\nAnd laughs to see the green man pass.<\/p>\n

Now, as the sun grew very hot
\nAnd he a heavy gun had got,
\nHe lay down underneath a tree
\nAnd went to sleep, as you may see.
\nAnd, while he slept like any top,
\nThe little hare came, hop, hop, hop,
\nTook gun and spectacles, and then
\nSoftly on tiptoe went off again.<\/p>\n

The green man wakes, and sees her place
\nThe spectacles upon her face.
\nShe pointed the gun at the hunter’s heart,
\nWho jumped up at once with a start.
\nHe cries, and screams, and runs away,
\n“Help me, good people, help! I pray.”<\/p>\n

At last he stumbled at the well
\nHead over ears, and in he fell.
\nThe hare stopp’d short, took aim, and hark!
\nBang went the gun! – she miss’d her mark!<\/p>\n

The poor man’s wife was drinking up
\nHer coffee in her coffee-cup;
\nThe gun shot Cup and saucer through;
\n“O dear!” cried she, “what shall I do?”
\nHiding, close by the cottage there,
\nWas the hare’s own child, the little hare;
\nWhen he heard the shot, he quickly arose,
\nAnd while he stood upon his toes,
\nThe coffee fell and burn’d his nose;
\n“O dear,” he cried, “what burns me so?”
\nAnd held up the spoon with his little toe.<\/p>\n
