The elves and brownies run about
\nThe streets on Halloween,
\nAnd ghostlings fat and specters lean,
\nWith many a whoop and many a shout
\nThe noisiest spooks you’ve ever seen
\nRomp on the village green.<\/p>\n

They gaily roam from street to street,
\nBy ones and twos or more
\nSometimes as many as a score!
\nTheir rally cry “A trick or treat,”
\nAs shyly they knock upon my door
\nWhile down the street come more.<\/p>\n

I wonder what might be the trick
\nWith which they threaten me.
\nI’ve never had the heart to be
\nAn old curmudgeon who would pick
\nOn such little tads and wee
